Copper Jewellery Care

Copper Wire

Copper is an absolutely beautiful metal that contains all kinds of different hues. It is always changing going from bright, shiny, rose gold-esque hues straight after polishing to deeper orange tones and eventually black once exposed to the elements.

Copper is known to oxidize quickly which is why it is constantly changing. Please note that my photos are taken after polishing. Always remember to remove your jewellery before showering or washing your hands. Getting your copper jewellery wet will quicken the oxidation process.

Allergies are common and should be well considered before purchasing.

Storing your copper jewellery correctly is important to slow down the oxidation process. Store in a dry airtight container or bag away from direct sunlight.

Copper jewellery should be handled with care due to the soft nature of copper. It is hardened during the creation process, however remains fairly flexible.

Copper is believed to be full of beneficial minerals that can be absorbed through direct contact with our skin. Some people say it will alleviate certain health issues and has been used in natural medicine since ancient times. However skin discoloration can sometimes be a side effect of copper jewellery. This does not happen for everyone or in all instances. It is most common with copper rings, and less likely to happen with loosely hanging pendants. It is a completely harmless side effect and will wash off. To help prevent skin discoloration with rings, clean the inside of your ring with nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol. Then add a couple of lays of high quality clear nail varnish. This will need to be reapplied for frequent use.

Polishing Copper Jewellery

There are a number of ways you can polish and clean copper jewellery. This includes shop bought products or home remedies. All orders include a small polishing cloth. These are a free gift that can be used to keep your jewellery bright. However there are, better quality polishing cloths and pads that could be worth investing in.

Below are a few methods for polishing copper.

Dilute Lemon Juice

You can easily polish your jewellery with dilute lemon juice. The stronger and more acidic the solution the more it will take effect. Pure lemon juice has the ability to remove the patina completely and should only be used if the bare copper look is intended.

I would recommend mixing one teaspoon of lemon juice with a cup of water and using a cotton bud to gently polish the copper. If your piece has any natural gemstones, care should be taken to avoid the stone. Always wash with clean water and pat dry after polishing.

Shine Rite Pro Polishing Pads

These are small white squares with micro abrasives, that are a quick and easy way to polish your jewellery. Gently use the polishing pads to wipe away the darker brown hues. These pads can be folded to easily reach the harder to polish areas and can be used multiple times before replacing.

There are many other home remedies and polishing methods. These can be researched online, however please use at your own discretion.

Sterling Silver Filled Jewellery Care

Sterling Silver Filled Wire

Sterling silver filled is a wire created with a copper core and a 99% purity silver coating. It has a lot more durability compared to silver plated wire, and it wont wear away to show the copper beneath. Sterling silver filled jewellery has a thick enough layer of silver to withstand being treated almost like real silver.

Sterling silver filled jewellery will tarnish very similarly to real silver. This means it will tarnish over time, gain darker hues and loose some of its shine. Please note that my photos are taken after polishing. Always remember to remove your jewellery before showering or washing your hands.

To help slow down the oxidation process it is important to store your jewellery in an airtight plastic bag or container. However if frequently worn it will brighten naturally. Always store away from direct sunlight, heat and humidity.

Sterling silver filled jewellery should be handled with care due its soft nature. It is hardened during the creation process, however remains fairly flexible.

Often sterling silver filled jewellery is okay for those with allergies. However if you have severe allergies I suggest you stick to the metals you know work for you. Often my sterling silver filled pendants come on silver plated chains, so these would need to be replaced for a 925 chain.

Suncatcher Care

Copper Wire

Copper is an absolutely beautiful metal that contains all kinds of different hues. When polished copper has an absolutely beautiful shine, which makes it perfect for catching the light.

All suncatchers are varnished with multiple coats of the Protectaclear. This will help protect against tarnishing. However no varnish lasts forever. Therefore overtime the copper will begin to patina or possibly even rust. Suncatchers are suitable for outdoor use, however exposure to the elements such as water and moisture in the air will speed up the oxidation process and increase the likely hood of rust.

To add a bit of sparkle back to your suncatcher there are multiple polishing methods. I would suggest using either jewellery polishing cloths or extra fine steel wire wool. After polishing it would be advisable to add another layer of polishing. Always take care around beads and stones.

Copper is the softest of metals. Due to the hammering during the creation process, they will hold there shape. However if not handled with care there is chance of bending.
